Top Hills to Climb Near Newton Stewart
At 843 metres (2,766 ft), The Merrick is the highest hill in southern Scotland and offers one of the best summit views in the region. On a clear day, you can see across to Northern Ireland and the Lake District.
Walk Time: 4–6 hours return
Start Point: Bruce’s Stone, Loch Trool
Why Go: A well-marked route, stunning lochside views, and a true sense of achievement.
Often climbed as part of a longer Merrick loop, Benyellary stands at 719 metres and makes for a more manageable alternative if you’re short on time or want a gentler ascent.
Walk Time: 2.5–3.5 hours
Views: Panoramic outlooks over Loch Trool and the Galloway Hills.
Craignaw is one for more experienced walkers who enjoy rougher, less-trodden terrain. The summit offers dramatic rocky scenery and sweeping views.
Walk Time: 5–6 hours
Note: Navigation skills needed — best attempted in good conditions.
Standing apart from the Galloway range, Cairnsmore of Fleet is one of Scotland’s southernmost Corbetts (a mountain between 2,500–3,000 ft). This isolated hill offers epic views over Wigtown Bay and the Solway Coast.
Walk Time: 3–4 hours
Features: Open moorland, occasional wild goats, and birdlife galore.
For a quieter climb with fewer crowds, Lamachan Hill is a fantastic alternative. You’ll enjoy a peaceful hike through open glens, with lovely views across the hills and forest.
Walk Time: 3–4 hours
Good for: Intermediate hikers wanting something a bit different.
