1. River Fishing: Water of Luce & River Bladnoch

Water of Luce

Running through New Luce and just minutes from Glenluce, this peaceful river is known for its salmon and sea trout runs.

Permit Required – Available through the Stranraer & District Angling Association.
Best for: Fly fishing in a tranquil rural setting.
Closest to: Glenluce, ideal if staying at The Galloway Steading.

 

River Bladnoch

A short drive away, the River Bladnoch is a productive salmon river and the longest in Wigtownshire.

Permits available via local angling clubs or private stretches.
Tips: Spring and autumn are best for salmon; summer for trout.

 

2. Sea Fishing: Coastal Spots Near Portpatrick & The Rhins

Wigtownshire’s rugged coastline makes for excellent sea angling, whether you’re casting from the rocks or trying beach fishing.

 

Portpatrick Harbour

A favourite for locals and visitors alike — fish for mackerel, pollock, and wrasse from the harbour walls.

No permit required
Great for: Beginners and family-friendly fishing
Bonus: Stunning sunsets over the Irish Sea

 

The Mull of Galloway

Scotland’s southernmost point, with dramatic cliffs and rich marine life. It’s also a great spot for deep-sea charter fishing trips.

Expect: Cod, pollock, mackerel, and flatfish

 

3. Stillwater Fishing: Lochs & Reservoirs

Loch Heron & Loch Dornal

Both located near Barhill, these lochs are stocked and known for good coarse fishing and wild brown trout.

Day permits available locally
Bring a picnic — these are beautiful, quiet spots surrounded by forest and farmland

 

Whitecairn Loch, Glenluce

A great location for rainbow trout fishing close to The Galloway Steading. Popular with locals and well-managed.

4. Crabbing & Family Fun: Port Logan & Portpatrick

If you’re after something more casual (and fun for the kids!), grab a bucket and some bait and go crabbing off the harbours at:
